It was a trip down memory lane visiting Jess in her studio today. I’d been a patient (dodgy back) when her studio was a treatment room but now it is a glorious, large creative space – perfect for a printmaker!

Jess told me that she’d been pursuing her love of printing for several years whilst juggling with work. Thankfully now she feels able to devote herself to it completely and is loving spending time in her studio.
She’s another member of the local creative group Makers of Rye and finds their support and encouragement invaluable.

Since 2022 I have documented ice patterns found in the landscape and translated them into prints and paintings. Working with monotype, woodcut and silkscreen, I build layered surfaces through mark-making and chine college, a tissue-paper collage process specific to printmaking. In the studio, these fleeting ice formations become a vehicle for imaginative and expressive colour.
Jess very kindly demonstrated some of her creative techniques to me – I am in awe of her skill and patience!

This is just a small selection of the photos we made today – do visit Jess’s website to find out more about her amazing work.
