Long time no Blog!

After being a regular contributor to the blog I had to take a break due to pressing family matters that have taken up the last few months. Photography had to take a back seat both because of time constraints but also inspiration was distinctly lacking.

Then once things had settled down a little there was a need to think about direction. I’d taken a decision to wind down professional work (teaching public speaking in schools) and to give more time to creative endeavours. But what?

While I haven’t been doing much photography-wise I have developed quite an interest in drawing. Various YouTube artists have been inspirational such as Mad Charcoal and also Draw Brighton is fantastic resource that I’ve subscribed to.

I’ve also done a three day portrait sculpture course with Andrian Melka which was great and I’m aiming to do more.

So, with all that in mind I decided to create both a photographic studio and a more practical space at home. My wife has also moved into retirement so her old office and adjoining box room became free. I took out the middle wall and two rooms became one. These are all located at one end of the house and so work well together – the photo studio downstairs and workshop now above. It’s taken quite a bit of work to pull it together but I’m just about there now and delighted with the results. Rubbish photos but here’s what it all looks like:

Standing desk for my photography editing.
Green walls, blue skirting, reddish bookcase – that’s the colour scheme I thought might inspire creativity!
The drawing area with the old board bought from my sister. Some early sketches framed until I hopefully produce something more accomplished!
Lots of photo portraits hung on the landing and down the stairs.
I’m hoping to start a drop in portrait studio in the new year and so, as sitters enter the house, they’ll see lots of examples of my work.
So they will come off the street, along past these portraits (ones on the floor are now on walls) and into the studio.
I choose a dark colour for the background here – a green rather than black.
I discovered some old portrait photos whilst clearing out a family loft and thought they worked well in here.

Just about set to go working across photography, drawing and clay sculpture.

Next month we’re heading to southern Spain for a couple of months most of which we’ll be based in Valencia but also visiting Bilbao, Pamploma and Madrid. Lots of street photography opportunities as well as gallery visits. This blog will therefore be updated regularly and I may even post on Instagram too.
