The Tuneless Choir, Pickering

The Tuneless Choir

I was invited to do a talk on photography at Appleton le Moors WI and afterwards was approached by Nadine Cooper to see if I was interested in photographing a choir she was involved in. There was the possibility of an article in Yorkshire Life in the new year and she needed more images. Of course I said yes and so, on Wednesday night, I found myself in Pickering Chapel with the ‘Tuneless Choir’.

Nadine is the founder of this unusual choir which are now found all over the country. They run a sort of franchise scheme for anyone wanting to start one. Here’s her thinking behind the concept:

“There are so many proven benefits of group singing – physical, emotional and social. It gets our endorphins flowing, which are known as the happy hormones. So as well as reducing stress it can help with anxiety and depression. It’s even been shown to help boost the immune system. I find that when you are singing, you just are in the moment, forgetting your day-to-day worries, and just feel joyful!”

It was a fabulous evening, ‘joyful and fun’ is the best way to describe it. I just wandered around taking photos while everyone sang a selection of songs from the movies. Nadine was in charge of tea and admin, husband John was on the laptop while Clair lead from the front.

And here are some of the photos I took:

Will pop in again to take some more in the near future.
