School pupils learning about pigeon racing from Kirkbymoorside Flying Club member Fred

taking pigeons to school

The final part of the project took place today, certainly in terms of photography, was a visit to our local primary school. The driver for this was to create greater awareness of the club amongst the younger generation but also to involve them, in a creative way, in the exhibition in March.

Fred, Jayne, Audrey, Libby and I (plus a few pigeons) were welcomed by the head and enjoyed listening to the whole school sing a jolly song about a dragon. Libby was amazingly quick minded however and suggested they sing it again but replace dragon, with pigeon. The words worked perfectly. They sang it again with Libby recording – it will be the finale to her CD – couldn’t be better.

Fred did a fabulous job presenting the background to pigeon racing history etc. Then Year 6 remained, Anna Aspery’s class, and they got up and close to the pigeons with Fred, Audrey and Jayne holding the birds and answering all their questions.

Anna is now going to do an art project with her class and doubtless produce something wonderful for the exhibition!
