I enjoyed watching this video by Imitative Photography about Todd Hido’s work shooting suburban houses at night.

and also Jamie Windsor’s excellent analysis of Todd Hido’s work covering the same area:

Funnily enough we are currently on a short holiday in Norfolk and have found ourselves in the middle of a housing estate of seventies bungalows – an opportunity to try out the Todd Hido technique!

So off I went with my my Canon 70D and a 35mm lens, plus tripod. The two evenings I went out were quite clear so didn’t benefit from any atmospheric fog or mist but it didn’t matter. It was more getting familiar with the settings, using the tripod and looking for night time interest.

There was no one about, I could see the TVs flickering in the living rooms and the streets were deserted so I didn’t have anyone asking what I was doing. I stayed out for around an hour each time.

Here’s the results:

I think this last one is my favourite as I like the three white birches. Nothing at all like Todd Hido but a start and a good experience of night photography. When I get back to North Yorkshire with autumn fast approaching I shouldn’t have a problem finding a bit of fog!
