It’s been a while

The last post was February 2nd so what have you been up to Gareth?!

Life really – just having to do stuff; gettiing my mum’s house on the market, helping relatives in Norwich and on the Isle of Wight with decorating projects, simulated patient work and more, has all swallowed up time. So I haven’t picked up my camera much. No portrait work since Jane but I have been creative as I’ve taken up drawing!

I was given some charcoal pencils for Christmas and have enjoyed trying to learn how to use them! I was immediately inspired by Mad Charcoal on YouTube and started drawing using online images and some of my own portraits.

This is my nephew Joel and he’s started drawing too – an excellent young artist!

There’s always something I don’t get quite right in the proportions. Usually the nose is too long or the eyes too far apart but after having watched a few tutorials I’m getting a bit better.

Charcoal on split logs!

It’s great fun and leading onto other things too – sculpture! This was done while we were on holiday on Mull.

With Rachel moving out of her office upstairs I’m hoping to create a bit of an arty studio whilst keeping my downstairs space just for photography. It’s exciting to be branching out beyond photography whilst still being very much focussed on the human portrait.
