I returned to the REfUSE project (mentioned in the last post) to take some photos of their volunteers and the cafe. I had a great time and met some lovely people, both voluntreers and cafe visitors – it’s a fabulous project.
I set up a backdrop and some simple continuous lights in the warehouse behind the cafe for formal portraits and also wandered around capturing as best I could volunteers at work.
In the warehouse there were fluorescent lights which created a slight flicker and though I played around with my settings I don’t think I got it right – they are quite grainy – so maybe I needed more powerful lights. The volunteers were great though and didn’t mind at all posing for me.
This was a fun one with Thelma – I asked her to throw a tomato in the air and I managed to get this quite by chance – looks like it’s been photoshopped but it hasn’t.
I got chatting to some of the cafe visitors too and they didn’t mind me taking photos of them either!
The image I’ve chosen for the feature at the top I’m really pleased with – it’s quite atmospheric I think.
I’m hoping that we’ll be able to develop a documentary photography project at REfUSE over the summer – there’s some interesting stories to be told. More on that in the next couple of weeks.
