Travelling back from dropping three teenagers at Leeds Fest I diverted into York for an hour of street photography. Parking in the nearest free street parking, just beyond the hospital, I made my way down Gillygate. It’s one of my favourite streets in the city with several 18th century houses and today seems to be flourishing with lots of independent, quality shops.
Through the Shambles and down towards the cathedral I spotted an animated couple sat under a tree.
I spent time hanging around the cathedral but nothing seemed to work particularly well.
Then I headed off to the main shopping streets and found some candidates for a bit of street portraiture – the first, a very sad looking man, next a street seller and a rather stylish woman with her dog, appropriately stood outside Zara.
There was also this gentleman that I should have photographed face on but with not many people around him it was hard to be discrete.
Time was running out so I headed back down Gillygate, then across the lights to the university buildings which are part of the York St John campus. The light was playing nicely on them so a few quick shots to see how I might edit them as black and white.
And that was going to be it but driving home, and heading towards Hovingham, a large field of straw bales caught my eye. Every year they make me think of aliens – they seem superimposed on the landscape somehow but make for quite dramatic shots.
